Acronyms Must always bE defiNed (AMEN).
To the Editor: In a recent article from a prominent cardiological journal, the authors compared major adverse cardiac event rates between primary coronary angioplasty and thrombolytic therapy. They reported their results for the PCAT collaboration, but never explained what the acronym PCAT stood for. That surprised and disappointed me, because according to the International Committee of Medical...

I greatly enjoyed reading the epidemiological article on coronary artery disease in Spain by Marrugat et al,1 but I was disappointed to observe that, although the authors explained some of the acronyms of the studies mentioned in the article, like IBERICA, REGICOR, and MONICA, they did not define PANES and PRIAMHO. I am not sure why the criteria were applied so unevenly. With the aim of keeping...
متن کاملPersistent URIs Must Be Used To Be Persistent
We quantify the extent to which references to papers in scholarly literature use persistent HTTP URIs that leverage the Digital Object Identifier infrastructure. We find a significant number of references that do not, speculate why authors would use brittle URIs when persistent ones are available, and propose an approach to alleviate the problem.
متن کامل[THIS SPACE MUST BE KEPT BLANK] A Tale of Cities: Urban Biases in Volunteered Geographic Information
Geotagged tweets, Foursquare check-ins and other forms of volunteered geographic information (VGI) play a critical role in numerous studies and a large range of intelligent technologies. We show that three of the most commonly used sources of VGI – Twitter, Flickr, and Foursquare – are biased towards urban perspectives at the expense of rural ones. Utilizing a geostatistics-based approach, we d...
متن کاملCan the Roche hemolysis index be used for automated determination of cell-free hemoglobin? A comparison to photometric assays.
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to develop a novel method for automated quantification of cell-free hemoglobin (fHb) based on the HI (Roche Diagnostics). METHODS The novel fHb method based on the HI was correlated with fHb measured using the triple wavelength methods of both Harboe [fHb, g/L = (0.915 * HI + 2.634)/100] and Fairbanks et al. [fHb, g/L = (0.917 * HI + 2.131)/100]. fHb conce...
